The Huaihai Campaign of the Chinese Civil War was one of China’s bloodiest battles. It began in the winter of 1948. The bloodbath took place between the Xuzhou and Bengbu with thousands from the KMT Army and The People’s Liberation Army taking part. Captain Guzidi, of the Ninth Company, led the 46 men under him on a sniping mission in defence of the Wen River’s south bank. The orders were to continue fighting until the assembly call of retreat was heard. After many long hours of defence, with ammunition and manpower decreasing, the Ninth Company began to wonder if they had missed the call. Guzidi, adamant that call had not been charged, encouraged his men to stay and continue fighting. Later, Guzidi discovered that neighbouring troops had indeed left the field and he wondered if he had made a mistake that cost the lives of some of his men. Upon awakening in a hospital, Guzidi discovers that as a result of military reorganisation, he and his men (who sacrificed their lives) have lost their ranks and identities and are classified as missing. Through sheer determination and a desire to honour his men, Guzidi embarks on an immense journey, to prove their existence…
