Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall), Charley Waite (Kevin Costner), Mose Harrison (Abraham Benrubi) and "Button" (Diego Luna) have a firm friendship built on honour and unhindered by the burdens of civilization as they allow their cattle to free graze across the prairie. One day they meet a dishonest Sheriff (James Russo) and kingpin rancher (Gambon) when their cattle wander close to the town of Harmonville. These tyrannical two govern the region through fear and violence. Boss and Charley become drawn to an inevitable showdown in defence of their free and honourable lifestyle. In the midst of all the goings on, Charley encounters Sue Barlow (Annette Bening), a beautiful a warm-hearted woman who captures his heart and soul. Amidst preparations for the battle ahead, these brave men must also face and defeat their own personal demons.
